A gem on the western Sardinian coast.
Known for its wild lands and its vast archaeological heritage, the Sinis Peninsula represents the ideal environment for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, but also for those seeking quiet and uncrowded beaches. Being within the Marine Protected Area "Sinis Peninsula - Mal di Ventre Island", the whole area within the Municipality of Cabras is particularly preserved and monitored, in order to safeguard such a precious and unique territory.

Stretches of precious quartz.
Protected and preserved by the Marine Protected Area, the beaches of Sinis are characterized by the so-called "grains of rice" or "quartz grains." The origin of this type of sand dates back about 600 million years, when a continuous process of erosion of the granite rocks of the Island of Mal di Ventre began. Today, thanks to this natural evolution, we can admire the peaceful white beaches of Is Arutas, Mari Ermi and Maimoni.

A journey into the archaeology of the Sinis Peninsula.
The Civic Archaeological Museum of Cabras is named after"Giovanni Marongiu" and was inaugurated in 1997. It represents the most important cultural center in the Province of Oristano and houses within it the vast historical and archaeological heritage from the territory of the Sinis Peninsula from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. From the site of Cuccuru is Arrius to thecity of Tharros, from the Roman wreck of Mal di Ventre to the famous statues of Mont’e Pramadepicting archers, warriors, and boxers, also called "the stone giants" and believed to date back to the end of the Nuragic age. The exhibition of the statuary complex dedicated to the Giants was inaugurated in 2014 with the setup of new dedicated rooms that have made the Museum and the entire territory of Cabras more attractive and competitive in the regional, national, and global cultural context. The Museum is open all year round and offers ticketing services, guided tours, educational workshops, and excursions in the territory of the Sinis Peninsula.

Between culture, flavors, and tradition.
The history of the village of Cabras begins with the abandonment of the city of Tharros, around 1070 AD, when the people of Sinis moved and settled inland. Cabras was one of the first villages, called biddas, that were founded, initially called Masone de Capras (literally goat stable). Located on the shores of the Stagno di Mar'e Pontis, the village has always been known for the richness of its waters and for its prized mullet bottarga, also boasting a strong cultural identity throughout Sardinia. The village of Cabras is well known for one of the most important annual events on the Sardinian island, the Corsa degli Scalzi.

An ancient fishing place.
The Mare'e Pontis fishery is located a few kilometers from the town center of Cabras. Among the buildings, constructed between the 1600s and 1700s and now disused, stands out Su Poatziu, the Palace, residence of the sovereign of the ponds, the ancient warehouses and all the structures used for the capture and sale of fish. The fishery is located at the center of a network of canals that lead from the Mar'e Pontis Lagoon to the sea, which is why the waters are brackish, perfect for the livability of certain fish species.

Between place of worship and film set.
The village of San Salvatore, of medieval origin, owes its name to the rural church of the same name, under which there is an ancient hypogeumlinked to the cult of spring water and evidence of some religious overlaps. Around the church, towards the end of the 17th century, several rural dwellings, called cumbessias, linked to the world of farmers, were built. The village owes part of its fame to its resemblance to Mexican landscapes, thanks to which several films were shot there between the 1960s and 1970s, during the phenomenon of the Italian western.

A tradition rooted in faith.
The village of San Salvatore di Sinis is known throughout the island for the traditional celebrations in honor of the Saint of the same name, which take place between August and September and during which the so-called Corsa degli Scalzi is held. The festival, which involves the entire community of Cabras, derives from an ancient event partly shrouded in legend. Tradition has it that around 1500, during a sudden Saracen raid on the village, the statue of the Saint was saved by men and women, running barefoot, towards the town of Cabras.
