CITY OF THARROS

Between past and present.

Known worldwide as one of the historical symbols of the western Mediterranean, the city of Tharros was founded at the end of the 8th century BC. by the Phoenician civilization. In 238 BC, with the arrival of the Romans in Sardinia, the area underwent a major urban transformation with the construction of several buildings and roads. Among the structures that can still be admired today are the columns and the base of the temple, the Roman baths, the tophet and the Cardo Maximus.

CHURCH OF SAN GIOVANNI DI SINIS

One of the oldest monuments in Sardinia.

The Church of San Giovanni di Sinis is one of the most important Christian buildings in all of Sardinia, together with the Basilica of San Saturnino in Cagliari and that of Sant'Antioco in the town of the same name. The original Greek cross layout dates back to the 6th century AD., the culminating moment of the Byzantine reconquest led by Emperor Justinian. Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the building was renovated with the adoption of a Latin cross plan still visible today. Currently, worship is celebrated in honor of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Augustine.

FALASCO HUTS

Testimonials from the world of fishing.

The falasco huts, called barraccas de cruccuri, are linked to the world of fishing and served as shelter for equipment and refuge for workers. Built with marsh grasses and in strategic locations, they usually formed small villages; among the many, those of Portu S'uedda,Mare Morto, Su Siccu and Torregrande are remembered. Around the 1980s, with the change in fishing areas, almost all the huts were demolished. Today only a few remain, some are private, while others have been rebuilt by the Marine Protected Area.

THE COASTAL TOWERS

The story that the sea tells.

The coastal towers present in the Cabras area were built during the Spanish domination, between the 16th and 17th centuries, to defend the territory and protect the local populations from threatening Arab incursions. The Tower of San Giovanni di Sinis, adjacent to the Tharros area, the Torre Vecchia or Capo S. Marco, and the Torre del Sevo or Turr'e Seu, are located on the coast and were armed if necessary. The Tower of Su Pottu is located on the banks of the Mar'e Pontis Lagoon, connected to the fishpond of the same name, and served as a control point for fishing activities.
